Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has responded to criticism from club legend Roy Keane, insisting that while he respects the former skipper, he has his own leadership style.
Fernandes, who played a key role in United’s 3-0 victory over Leicester City on Sunday, was singled out by Keane on the Stick to Football podcast, where the Irishman questioned his work rate.
The 30-year-old Portuguese midfielder has faced scrutiny in the past for his animated on-field demeanor, often gesturing and arguing, something he acknowledges can provoke mixed reactions.
"I do things in my own way," Fernandes told Sky Sports. "Obviously, it’s not nice to hear criticism, but at the same time, it motivates you. People see areas where you need to improve, and I take that positively.
"I have a huge respect for Roy Keane, but not everything I do will be liked by everyone. I accept that I still have a lot of room for improvement in my game, my leadership, and my life in general."
Fernandes has been one of United’s standout performers this season, registering 16 goals and 15 assists in 44 appearances across all competitions. Against Leicester, he scored once and provided two assists.
Despite the win, United remain in 13th place in the Premier League with 37 points from 29 matches.
Manager Ruben Amorim praised Fernandes' resilience and ability to recover quickly. "He's a special player, always ready. I don’t know what the future holds, but the data and what I see in games tell me he’s always dangerous and capable of bouncing back. What surprised me most is how hard he works every day."
