 Minister of Oil, Shaikh Mohamed bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, inaugurated the Geographic Information System (GIS) Day 2019 Conference.

 The event was sponsored and organised by Tatweer Petroleum, MicroCenter, and Tarteeb, at Hotel Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa and was attended by industry leaders, experts, and professionals in the field of GIS.

“Geospatial data has become an essential element in operational decision making in the oil and gas industry in Bahrain in that it is a useful tool to analyze and display different forms of data.” said the minister in his keynote speech.

“Whether it is in daily operations of facilities or exploration projects, GIS plays an important role in industrial development, especially in the Kingdom’s pursuit of advancement in oil and gas exploration. Additionally, this technology will assist in geological exploration for petroleum,” he added.

Dr. Ghulum Bakiri, President and Founder of MicroCenter Group, said in his opening remarks “GIS Day is a celebration of how important geographical information is to the future of industries. I foresee an influx of GIS professionals around the world, and in Bahrain in particular, heralding a very promising future for the technology.”

The minister then toured a special showcase that was hosted by Tatweer Petroleum employees who presented various GIS projects and initiatives that were implemented in the company. This edition of the event brought together industry experts from Tatweer Petroleum, Esri, Bahrain E-Government Authority, and more, who presented technical sessions on various areas of GIS, including Enterprise GIS Systems and Web Applications, transforming organizations with location intelligence, the Bahrain soil mapping project and drone technology.
