Finnish authorities have ordered Google to suspend environmentally significant preparatory work at two planned data centre sites, citing the need to complete mandatory environmental impact assessments.

The order affects projects in Muhos and Kajaani, where Google's Finnish subsidiary, Tuulilasi Finland, has been carrying out preparations for new facilities. The Finnish Licensing and Supervisory Agency said work that significantly alters the surrounding environment must stop immediately and no later than October 21.

The suspension covers activities including tree clearing, removal of topsoil, construction of access roads and storage areas, and modifications to drainage infrastructure. Lower-impact activities such as planning, measurements and soil surveys can continue.

The decision follows scrutiny over extensive preparatory work already carried out at the sites, including forest clearing. Finnish authorities are investigating whether environmental requirements were fulfilled before the necessary assessments were completed.

The developments come weeks after Google announced plans to invest €13 billion in Finland over the next two years, expanding its data centre and digital infrastructure presence in locations including Hamina, Kajaani, Muhos and Vaala. Google said the investment is intended to support growing demand for its digital and AI services.
