Playtime turns tragic

Manama

A 16-year-old boy who was admitted to a hospital following a cardiac arrest during a soccer game has been deemed clinically dead, DT news has learnt.

Elias Ali Jawad swallowed his own tongue after a ball hit his face with force last Saturday in Sanabis.

DT news had earlier reported that he was given a lifeline when spectators responded in no time and brought in Dr. Habib Al Tareef, a Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgeon residing in the same area, to resuscitate him. He was admitted to BDF Hospital's Intensive Care Unit in critical state.

A source close to the family confirmed to DT news that they were told by the hospital staff that they weren't able to save his life.

"Unfortunately, the doctors couldn’t save his life. The family were thunderstruck when the medical staff in charge of Elias told them he was clinically dead and there were no hopes left that he would wake up again," the source, who wished anonymity, said.

"After suffering a cardiac arrest, his brain was largely damaged due to lack of oxygen supply. He is currently on life support. But he is brain-dead unfortunately and we aren't sure for how long they will keep the machines on him," the source added.

This comes in less than a month after 14-year-old Bahraini national Hassan Isa Al Muri lost his life while taking part in a tug-of-war game. He was later pronounced dead in a Barbar medical clinic. He also suffered a cardiac arrest.
