Fleurance, France: Public fury is mounting across France following confirmation that an 11-year-old girl, Lyhanna, was raped before her death. The young girl vanished on May 29, and her body was discovered a week later inside an abandoned agricultural silo. While forensic experts are still determining the exact cause of death, authorities have detained a 41 year old man,the father of one of Lyhanna’s school friends on abduction charges.
The tragedy has triggered intense national outrage and a political backlash after it emerged that the suspect had been formally accused of child rape twice before. In the most recent case filed last August, police had not even summoned him for questioning.
This revelation prompted French President Emmanuel Macron to express deep concern over systemic failures and the erosion of public trust in state institutions. Independent data reveals that nearly 75% of child sexual abuse complaints in France are dropped, with a severe shortage of investigative staff and resources blamed for the low conviction rates.
