Asian freed for torching Bahraini sponsor home

An Asian maid accused of setting her Bahraini sponsor’s home afire in retaliation over his mistreatment was acquitted due to lack of evidence.

The woman was standing trial before the High Criminal Court on charges of putting lives of people in danger and causing damage to a private property.

It was claimed that the defendant set ablaze her room in her sponsor’s house before escaping and leaving the family to face their fate. The sponsor had claimed that the maid torched the house between 3.49am and 3.58am before she fled at 6.45am. The court said that it was irrational for the fire to remain in a house for three hours without causing major damage to it.

Pictures attached with the case showed a plastic closet, which was seen with minor damage only. The sponsor told prosecutors that he had captured the maid in the office that brought her to work in the Kingdom.

However, the defendant denied torching the place, but confirmed escaping “because of being a prey to continuous abuses from her sponsor,” according to her statement.

“He was always shouting at me and there were huge differences between us as I was asked to do a pile of work,” she said.

“I had agreed with them to stay for one year, and then I was asked to work for another year or pay them BD900 because they claimed I had breached my contract,” she added.
