Bahrain Develops Ai systems to monitor "Alba power turbines"

The Nasser Centre for Science and Technology (NCST), in collaboration with Aluminium Bahrain (Alba), has successfully developed an artificial intelligence-powered system designed to monitor gas turbines and support maintenance decisions at Alba’s Power Station 4.

Developed by the NCST’s Artificial Intelligence Research and Development Team, the system is designed to improve the reliability and efficiency of critical industrial equipment while helping maintenance teams identify potential problems before they lead to unplanned failures.

The technology monitors four gas turbines — GT-51, GT-52, GT-61 and GT-62 — and uses AI-driven analytics to assess their performance and identify operational changes that could require attention.

The system examines key indicators such as compressor pressure and turbine blade cooling efficiency. This allows engineers to detect early signs of issues, including fouling and cooling-port blockages, before they significantly affect turbine performance.

It also compares real-time operating conditions with AI-based predictive models. Any significant deviation between expected and actual performance can be identified at an early stage, giving maintenance teams valuable information to support faster and more accurate decisions.

The platform brings together live operational data, historical records, AI analytics and advanced visualisation tools in a single secure system. Engineers can continuously monitor turbine performance, study long-term trends and identify thermal imbalances or other conditions that could affect equipment reliability.

An automated alert system is also built into the platform. When operating conditions move beyond approved engineering limits, specialists receive information showing the affected turbine, expected and actual readings, the percentage of deviation and the severity of the alert.

This enables maintenance teams to respond more quickly, take corrective action and reduce the likelihood of unexpected equipment downtime.

The project forms part of the ongoing cooperation between NCST and Alba to expand the use of artificial intelligence and advanced technologies across Bahrain’s industrial sector.

The initiative also supports Bahrain’s wider drive towards digital transformation and a knowledge-based economy, with AI being increasingly used to improve industrial efficiency, reliability and decision-making.
