Mechanics leave speed buffs agape

It was just last year in Austin that Red Bull Formula One team logged the record pitstop timing – 1.923 seconds for Mark Webber and there is no doubt, it’s a vital factor that helped them clinch the title.

The speed at which the mechanics at Marussia and Williams garage managed to change the tyres of the F1 cars left visitors who participated in the pit-lane walk at the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) yesterday agape.

Meet Adnan Mohammed, a Saudi-based Indian businessman, who didn’t hide his excitement on seeing the mechanics of Force India at work during a trial session.

“I just love watching these mechanics. The pace at which they change the tyres is really awesome,” he said, and in a tongue-in-cheek manner added, he wished he could change the tyres of his car in such pace.

Meanwhile, Graham Collins, who came all the way from the United Kingdom for the Bahrain Grand Prix told DT News that majority in the public were unaware of the part being played by the mechanics.

“For me, they are the ones who are the real heroes. They tune the engines and manage the race behind the curtains. Sans them no driver would be able to win the race,” he added.

“Except the scorching sun, everything here is absolutely fine. But I don’t mind the sun anymore, because for me, it’s the race and nothing else,” he added.

A Massa treat

One of the most popular drivers has to be Felipe Massa of the Williams who took time to meet the fans and sign a few autographs. The fans also got the rare chance to take ‘selfies’ with him.

One British spectator, who participated in the pit-lane walk said, “Felipe Massa is a true gentleman,” as he proudly showed a photo of his son with the driver and doing an autograph.

Side activities getting ready

Meanwhile, on other parts of the circuit, some of the entertainment acts were tuning up for their shows and many of the side activities were already in place, along with the many food outlets setting up for the opening day today.
