Bahrain has affirmed its support for the United Nations and its efforts to ensure the full and effective participation of women around the world in public life, the elimination of violence against women, and the achievement of gender balance.

During his participation in the closing session of the 65th session of the UN CSW, the Supreme Council for Women’s International Relations and Follow-up Adviser Mohammed Al Faris emphasised the Council’s keenness to continue providing support and advice to advance women at the national, regional and global levels.

The Council has advanced experience in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic and the ability to create supportive mechanisms for women that keep pace with the exceptional circumstances of the pandemic and meet the emerging needs of Bahraini women in the social, economic, family and other fields, he added.

Al Faris stressed the importance of coordination and harmonisation between global requirements and national orientations while taking into account the peculiarity of countries in the field of integrating women’s needs in development and gender balance through the implementation of national plans and visions based on the social justice and equal opportunities endorsed by their laws and constitutions.

The session discussed women’s effective participation in public life, including in decision-making and measures to eliminate, prevent and respond to all forms of violence against women and girls in public and private spaces.

It also reviewed an assessment of the current challenges facing the world due to the coronavirus pandemic and affecting the implementation of progress towards achieving gender balance and supporting women. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, the Executive Director of UN Women, urged all countries to move forward quickly to achieve equal representation of women and men in all areas of development and life.

She stressed in her speech during the closing session that the pandemic has alerted all countries to the need to work together to accomplish much of the remaining work in order to support women around the world.
