Bahrain to mark World Braille Day today

The Kingdom of Bahrain will mark today the World Braille Day, which falls annually on the 4th of January. This is third year the global community marks the event since it was officially designated by the UN General Assembly as a day to raise awareness on the importance of braille as a means of communication.

Education Minister Dr Majid bin Ali Al Nuaimi stressed Bahrain’s keenness to integrate blind students in the government schools and supply them, along with their teachers, with Braille machines, in addition to talking computers and Pronto device for the blind. “The ministry has one of the largest printing presses devoted to printing books and instructional panels written in Braille for all school facilities that implement the integration programme for blind students for boys and girls in 36 schools,” he said.

Dr Al Nuaimi said that the Directorate of Special Education is keen on continued online learning for the blind students in light of COVID-19 pandemic. He stressed Bahrain’s success in integrating the blind in public education after it provided them with appropriate educational services in terms of curricula, qualified teachers, support devices and other necessary requirements.

“The drive comes within the framework of the policy of integrating many categories of special needs, embodying what was stipulated in the Kingdom’s constitution and the Law Education, which make it mandatory to provide education for all,” he said. The Minister noted that 19 support teachers pay field visits, in cooperation with the Saudi Bahraini Institute for the Blind, to 30 schools to provide educational and counselling services to 37 blind students.
