Self punishment for 'stupidity'

Manama

A person sent himself to jail as a ‘punishment’ for his ‘stupidity’, the High Criminal Appeals Court heard.

He was earlier sentenced to two months in jail for performing a drift show inside the General Directorate of Traffic’s premises in Isa Town.

He reportedly did it to “relieve himself of his internal disappointment after going to the directorate to inquire about his traffic offences, only to find it closed as it was a Friday,” according to his statement.

He didn’t take a U-turn and return home. He decided to punish himself for his “stupidity” to go all the way to the directorate on an off day.

He reportedly barged into the directorate skipping all the barricades before pulling up the hand brake for a 360-degree car-spin.

It was discovered later he was under influence of alcohol.

“I was very upset to learn that it was Friday as I was very close to the directorate. I couldn’t think of anything else but to punish myself by going to jail to atone for my stupidity,” the accused said in his statement.

“Therefore I decided to drift the car and later surrender myself. I saw police officers standing by the gate, but I steered my car inside the property. And then I made a few drifts,” he added.

The accused also rammed into two parked police jeeps while attempting to stop his car.

Court files indicated the car he was driving belonged to his brother.

Investigators later learnt by checking his criminal records, he was previously arrested over driving without a license and for drifting car in public areas.

He was earlier sent to a psychology centre to ascertain his mental health, but results confirmed he wasn’t mentally ill.
