Woman’s jail sentence upheld in cheque case

ManamaThe High Criminal Appeals Court rejected the appeals of a Bahraini woman, aged 46, convicted in connection with issuing dud cheques.

The appellant has 33 complaints against her for handing cheques despite not having enough money in her account.

She received a combined sentence equal to five years and two months in prison after she is said to have pocketed money worth BD45,7000 from various people.

According to court files, the defendant was serving in a local bank, and she convinced several people of her ability to invest their money.

Hence they supported her with cash in exchange of cheques equal to the paid money.

In one of the cases against her, a Bahraini man reported that the defendant swindled BD15,000 out of him before he discovered that the cheque she had given to him was worthless.
