Mini Olympics kicks off

ManamaThe opening ceremony of the fourth Mini Olympics was held yesterday at the Isa Sports City’s  Bahrain Volleyball Association gym in Riffa.

The Mini Olympics is being organised by the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) in cooperation with the Ministry of Education.

Supreme  Council for Youth & Sport Chairman, Bahrain Olympic Committee President & Royal Charity Organisation (RCO) Chairman HH  Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa inaugurated the Mini Olympics, which will run until March 30.

Minister of Education Dr. Majid Al Nuaimi, Supreme Council for Youth and Sports deputy general secretary and BOC general secretary Abdulrahman Askar, as well as representatives of sports federations and ministries were present.

Askar in a statement said he was pleased by the outstanding turnout and lauded participation from the government and private schools in 14 sports - football, 3-on-3 basketball, volleyball, handball. table tennis, athletics cricket, hockey, swimming, water sports, gymnastics, taekwondo, jiu jitsu and karting.

“This year we have more than 2,000 students from 42 schools taking part, which is something that exceeded our expectations” said Askar.

Meanwhile, competition got underway with cricket matches near the national stadium, where the Indian School ‘A’ beat the New Millennium School by 36 runs. 

In other matches, Combined School ‘B’ received a walkover against New Millennium School ‘B’, Ibn Al Haytham Islamic School beat Indian School ‘B’ by 26 runs, Combined School ‘A’ were 45-run winners 
over St. Christopher’s School and Indian School beat Combined School by seven wickets.

Table tennis, 3x3 basketball and karting events also got underway yesterday, with Al Noor International School registering the biggest result in the basketball tournament with an easy 12-2 win over the Indian School ‘D’. 

In table tennis, Susan Nayana and Amil Amruta reached the primary girls final, while Angadpreet S. will clash with Sakeeth in the primary boys
final.
