‘Excess water disposed without harming the environment’

ManamaAll the excessive rainwater drained from the Kingdom is being disposed of in the nearest deserted land or coast, without harming the environment, Southern Area Municipal Council Chairman Ahmed Al Ansari explained to DT News.

“The disposal of the  collected rainwater depends on which area is closer. For example, the water drained from areas in Riffa is discarded in Buhair and Hinainiya valleys, while the water excavated from coastal cities or villages like Askar are disposed of in the sea,” Al Ansari said.

Meanwhile several videos emerged online, showing wastewater tankers disposing of their loads in the sea. Many social media users condemned the act, considering it to be harmful to the island’s marine environment.

Clarifying further on this point, Al Ansari said, “Usually we use non-drinking water tankers to store the accumulated rainwater and disposing it. This time, the sewage water tankers had to be utilised in many areas of the Kindgom, considering the intensity of the heavy rains. Water in the puddles and swamps exceeded the capacity of the tankers normally used for this purpose.”

“The tankers are originally meant for moving wastewater, but it is carrying rainwater now. The water collected is clean and disposing of it in the sea is absolutely harmless to the environment,” the councilor added.
