Uzbekistan, Australia win

ManamaUzbekistan made a remarkable comeback against Tajikistan to win 2-1 in their opening match in Group ‘D’ in the AFC U-19 Football Championship match last night at the National Stadium in Riffa.

Goals from substitute Sayidjamol Davlatjonov in the 67th minute and Jasurbek Yakhshiboev (72nd) sealed victory and three points after Tajik skipper Kraomatullo Saidov had earlier given his side the lead after 20 minutes.

In the same group, Mario Shabow in the 47th minute scored the only goal as Australia earned a tough 1-0 victory over one time-winner China.

Tournament action continues today with the opening day of the second round when two-time winner Saudi Arabia and Thailand look for their maiden wins in Group ‘A’, which will kick off at 4.30pm at the National Stadium.

It will be followed by the highly-anticipated match between hosts Bahrain and 12-time champions South Korea in the top-of- table clash at 7.30pm at Khalifa Sports City Stadium in Isa Town.

Bahrain started their quest for glory with a late 3-2 win over Saudi Arabia, while South Korea eased to a 3-1 win over Thailand.

The four coaches shared their thoughts ahead of their key clashes yesterday at the pre-matches press conference, as Bahrain coach Abdulaziz Abdo noted the support from the people of Bahrain and the national football association to achieve their aspiration.

“Korea Republic are a strong team. I watched them and they have their strong points and weaknesses, but I hope we can do our best in that game,” said Abdo. (AFP)
