Jawad Mini Marathon 2016 to help sickle cell patients

Like its previous editions, Jawad Mini Marathon 2016 will focus on a social issue. This time, the spotlight is on the potentially fatal sickle cell disease (SCD), which is prevalent in Bahrain.

The 9th edition of the marathon, which will be held on March 4, has been tag-lined, “Help the Cause, Run, Walk for Sickle Cell.” It aims to spread awareness about the disease by throwing light on how it affects the people and the required measures to limit its spread.

All the proceeds from the race, which is organised by Jawad Business Group (JBG) under the patronage of Northern Governor Ali A Hussain Al Asfoor, will be donated to various charity organisations that support sickle cells patients.

The mini marathon will have three categories: 5km, 8km and a walkathon of 3km. The categories are further divided into different age groups for both men and women in order to give a fair chance of winning for all. There is also a special category for handicapped participants.

There will be over 25 trophies for the winners besides a raffle draw with more than 20 prizes.

The organisers have reiterated that the focus of the race was the support to the sickle cell patients, adding that participating is as important as winning the race. They have even suggested that the participants, who are not able to run, could also walk.

A medical team from the American Mission Hospital will be present with their ambulance at The Jawad Dome during the event to look into emergency situations. Free health check-ups will also be conducted on the day.

The organisers have worked closely with the Traffic and the Public Security Directorates in the Ministry of Interior to ensure that all proceedings will go smoothly. The course will be clearly marked and organisers will be present at every track junction to direct participants and provide them with water or medical help, if necessary.

Earlier, the Jawad Business Group had helped draw attention to issues such as breast cancer, which has plagued women across the world.

Participants will have to register online on www.jawadminimarathon.com between February 16 and March 3. The registration fees will be BD2 for adults and BD1 for children below 16.
