The Ministry of Industry and Commerce has urged manufacturers, importers and traders to complete preparations for Bahrain's upcoming ban on thin single-use plastic bags, with the regulation set to take effect next month.
Sayed Ali Shubbar, Director of the Inspection and Standards Directorate at the ministry, said businesses must comply with Resolution No. 7 of 2026, which prohibits the use of single-use plastic bags with a thickness of less than 57 microns.
Speaking during an interview on Bahrain TV, Shubbar encouraged companies to make full use of the remaining transition period by adjusting production lines, securing compliant alternatives and clearing existing stock before the regulation comes into force.
He said the ministry has already prepared a comprehensive guidance manual explaining the resolution's requirements and is providing dedicated communication channels to answer business questions. Awareness sessions have also been organised to help manufacturers, importers and traders understand the new standards and ensure smooth implementation.
Shubbar noted that the commercial sector had been involved throughout the implementation process. The ministry first notified the draft regulation to the World Trade Organization before sharing it with the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry and holding meetings with stakeholders to explain the technical specifications and address concerns.
He said the ministry received strong cooperation from most companies, with many already modifying production lines or working with suppliers to source compliant products. Several businesses have also begun offering environmentally friendly alternatives ahead of the deadline.
Acknowledging the challenges faced during the transition, Shubbar said businesses have been working to clear old inventory, identify new suppliers and understand the technical requirements, particularly those related to the thickness and specifications of approved plastic bags.
