Moves to Regulate Shop Signboards

New rules could soon be introduced to standardise shop signs across Bahrain, following approval of a proposal aimed at improving the visual appearance of commercial streets.

The Southern Municipal Council has backed a plan submitted by Fourth Constituency representative Mohammed Daraj to develop unified guidelines for commercial signage.

The proposal targets issues such as oversized boards, conflicting colours, and inconsistent storefront designs, which officials say have contributed to visual clutter in several commercial areas.

The plan calls for specific regulations covering the size, design, colour schemes, and placement of shop signs. It aims to balance business visibility with improved urban aesthetics and more organised streetscapes.

Daraj stressed that the proposal is not intended to restrict businesses, but to create a structured system that ensures consistency while still allowing flexibility based on location and commercial activity.

He added that unregulated signage has negatively affected the appearance of commercial facades and reduced overall street quality.

If implemented, the initiative is expected to reduce visual clutter and improve the overall look of commercial districts, making streets more organised and easier for residents and visitors to navigate.
