Life sentence for drug trafficking in Bahrain

MANAMA: The court has sentenced an Asian man to life imprisonment after convicting him of importing and possessing narcotics with intent to traffic, the Public Prosecution said on Thursday.
The Criminal High Court also fined the defendant 10,000 Bahraini dinars and ordered his permanent deportation from the country following the completion of his sentence.
According to the Deputy Head of the Drug Crimes Prosecution at the Public Prosecution, the case began after the Anti-Narcotics Directorate at the Ministry of Interior received a tip-off regarding a postal parcel arriving from abroad, addressed to the accused.
Customs officers became suspicious while scanning the shipment using X-ray equipment. Upon inspection, the parcel was found to contain several bottles holding a narcotic substance weighing 2.5 kilograms.
The Public Prosecution said it launched an immediate investigation, during which the defendant was questioned and confronted with the seized drugs and other evidence gathered against him.
He was subsequently referred in custody to the Criminal High Court, which issued its verdict convicting
