Bahrain announced its candidacy for membership in the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council for the next term, reaffirming its commitment to advancing international cooperation and supporting global digital development initiatives.

The announcement came during a reception hosted by Bahrain on the sidelines of the ITU Council meetings 2026 in Geneva.

Attendees included Bahrain’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and other international organisations in Geneva Ambassador Abdullah Abdul Latif Abdullah, Acting Assistant Undersecretary for Telecommunications Shaikh Ahmed bin Isa bin Duaij Al Khalifa and senior officials, diplomats, and representatives of member states and international organisations.

Shaikh Ahmed bin Isa bin Duaij Al Khalifa said Bahrain’s renewed bid reflects its strong standing in the telecommunications and technology sectors and its ambition to play an active role within the UN agency.

He highlighted Bahrain’s goals, including bridging the digital divide, advancing inclusive digital transformation, enabling responsible use of emerging technologies, and strengthening international cooperation to improve the ITU’s effectiveness and outcomes.

He also reaffirmed Bahrain’s support for the candidacy of Adel Mohammed Darwish for the post of ITU Deputy Secretary-General, noting his experience and expertise in enhancing international collaboration and developing the ICT sector towards a more inclusive and sustainable digital future.
