Bahrain Expands Ban on Single-Use Plastic Bags
Industry and Commerce Minister Abdullah bin Adel Fakhro has announced a new decision banning the manufacture, import and sale of single-use plastic bags that are less than 57 microns thick.
The new rule, issued under Decision No. (7) of 2026, is part of Bahrain’s efforts to reduce plastic waste and move toward more environmentally friendly practices. It also supports the Kingdom’s goal of reaching carbon neutrality by 2060.
The ban applies to all single-use plastic carrying bags under 57 microns, including those that contain plastic materials. This covers shopping and transport bags provided at stores, whether they have handles or not, and whether they are given free at checkout or sold separately.
Some bags are excluded from the ban. These include household garbage bags, hazardous medical waste bags, food and medicine packaging, and bags prepared for export.
Authorities will closely monitor the implementation of the decision. Products will be checked before entering the country to ensure they meet the new requirements. Market inspections will also be carried out to make sure businesses comply with the rule.
A detailed guideline in Arabic and English will be issued to help companies understand the new requirements and apply them correctly.
Businesses will be given a six-month transition period to clear existing stock and adjust to the new standards.
The decision builds on earlier measures introduced in recent years to limit plastic products and reduce environmental impact, as part of Bahrain’s wider sustainability strategy.
