Aden of fresh veggies, Farmers reap fortune

Manama

Bahraini Farmers’ Market, which successfully won the hearts of many, organized by the National Initiative for Agricultural Development, concluded here yesterday at the Budaiya Botanical Garden.

The event offered a place for farmers to sell locally grown vegetables at a nominal price on every Saturday, from 8am to 12 noon, at the Budaiya Garden.

After an overwhelming response, since its launch last December, the farmers here bade adieu to the market with a note of gratification.

Faten, who had been selling different varieties of dates at the market said the business had been satisfactory this year.

“We have had an opportunity to reach many customers this year as the public response was good. It won’t be easy for us to make business under scorching sun in the coming days. We will be back again when the Bahraini Farmers’ Market resumes its activities during next winter,” she said.

Comparatively, the final day saw a lesser crowd. “It was due to rise in temperature,” said a local farmer adding that, it was high time to conclude the market as people won’t prefer visiting during extreme summer.

Argentine national Cecilia, who was seen busy buying fresh vegetables at the market said the freshness of vegetables attracted her to the place.

“The vegetables are really fresh here. You won’t get such at the supermarkets or vegetable markets in Bahrain. A number of vegetables are somewhat expensive. But others are really cheap,” said Cecilia, adding that they visited here to promote the local farmers as well as farming activities also.

Another customer, Khandan appreciated the ambience at the market, which is located in between the garden. “I like this area. That’s why I regularly visit here to buy vegetables. In the meantime, I am happy that I am supporting local farmers,” she added.
