Manama: A 28-year-old Bahraini man has been arrested for attempting to circulate counterfeit currency after using fake banknotes at a hotel and a supermarket, authorities said.
According to case details, the suspect paid with a counterfeit BD 20 note to rent a hotel room. Although he received BD 10 in change, the receptionist became suspicious of the bill and alerted the hotel owner, who confirmed it was fake and reported the incident to police.
A few hours later, a supermarket employee filed a similar complaint after the same individual attempted to pay for goods using another counterfeit BD 20 note.
Police launched an operation and arrested the suspect shortly afterward. During questioning, he admitted that he was aware the banknotes were counterfeit and said he had obtained them from another person with the intention of using and circulating them for personal gain.
Authorities also discovered additional counterfeit notes hidden inside the suspect’s cigarette pack. A forensic forgery expert confirmed that the fake currency closely resembled genuine banknotes and could easily deceive ordinary users.
The Public Prosecution stated that during 2025, the accused intentionally acquired counterfeit money and used it at commercial establishments to unlawfully obtain property belonging to others.
The case has been scheduled for judgment on March 17.
