Bahrain’s High Criminal Court has heard the case of an Asian couple accused of importing illegal drugs through postal parcels sent from two European countries.

During the hearing, both defendants denied the charge of drug importation.

The wife told the court she has a six-month-old baby who is currently staying at her country’s embassy and asked to be released to care for her child.

She said she had no knowledge of the parcels sent in her name.

Her husband supported her statement but admitted to using drugs.

Prosecutors charged the couple, both in their forties, with importing cannabis and marijuana with intent to traffic during 2025, outside the cases permitted by law. The woman works at a women’s salon, while the man is a salesman.

The second defendant was also charged with possessing psychotropic substances for personal use without legal authorisation.

According to testimony from a senior customs officer at Bahrain International Airport, a suspicious parcel arriving from a European country on 29 May at around 4:00pm was flagged during inspection.

A sniffer dog alerted officers, and the package was found to contain a plastic bottle holding liquid suspected to be CBD oil, weighing about 1.138 kilograms.

Another parcel arriving from Europe on 26 August at around 6:00am was found to contain 900 grams of marijuana.
