Former Diplomat Dr. Dhafer Ahmed Al Omran Passes Away
Former Foreign Ministry diplomat Dr. Dhafer Ahmed Al Omran passed away today, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in Bahraini diplomacy, public service, education, and community work. He was widely respected as one of Bahrain’s most prominent diplomatic figures, known for his long career and significant contributions to national development.
Dr. Al Omran held several key leadership roles at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including Assistant Undersecretary for GCC and Western Countries Affairs. In this position, he played an important role in strengthening GCC cooperation and enhancing Bahrain’s relations with European and American countries. He also served as Director of the Bilateral Relations Department, helping shape foreign policy and build strategic partnerships with countries around the world. Over the years, he represented Bahrain in many regional and international meetings, including events focused on the Palestinian cause and intercultural dialogue.
Beyond diplomacy, Dr. Al Omran had a strong presence in Bahrain’s academic and institutional sectors. Since 2000, he served as a member of the Board of Trustees at the University of Bahrain and was Deputy Chair of its Financial Committee. He also sat on the Board of the Education and Training Quality Authority and held roles in several educational institutions, reflecting his deep commitment to education and human development.
Academically, he earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics from the American University of Beirut, followed by a master’s and PhD in Economic Development Management from the University of Southern California. His expertise led him to significant economic positions, including serving as Executive Director at the Islamic Development Bank, where he contributed to development and funding programs in several Islamic countries.
Dr. Al Omran was also active in community and cultural fields. He served as President of the Rotary Club of Salmaniya and held honorary memberships in multiple Bahrain–foreign friendship associations, promoting cultural exchange and human connection. His well-known Ramadan majlis brought together diplomats, officials, and community figures from various sectors.
Bahrain today mourns the loss of a distinguished national figure whose impact spanned diplomacy, education, development, and community service.
