Embassy of Japan leads ‘One Ocean, Our Future’ Beach Clean-Up
On Saturday, 8 November 2025, the Embassy of Japan in the Kingdom of Bahrain led a successful beach clean-up at Malkiya Beach, bringing together 300 volunteers in a powerful demonstration of community action. This event, part of the Embassy’s "One Ocean, Our Future" initiative, followed the screening of the acclaimed Japanese anime "Children of the Sea," embodying the theme "Weaving Ocean Connections through Anime and Action." The clean-up demonstrated the strength of community engagement and international cooperation in addressing environmental challenges. Volunteers from diverse backgrounds, including students, families, and representatives from various organizations and private sector, worked together to remove truckloads of waste from the beach. This effort directly contributed to marine ecosystem protection and climate action, aligning with SDGs 13 (Climate Action) and 14 (Life Below Water).
The event's success was underpinned by strategic partnerships, exemplifying SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). Key collaborators included CleanUp Bahrain and the Bahrain Science Center for SDGs of the Ministry of Youth Affairs, joined by UNDP, UNHABITAT, and United Nations Volunteers, with support from Al Jazira, and ASICS. To recognize community participation, Al Jazira and ASICS provided products for volunteers, with ASICS organizing a raffle for five lucky winners who got vouchers for their high-performing shoes. This added a celebratory element to the day's environmental work, reinforcing the sense of shared accomplishment.
Her Excellency Ms. Asako OKAI, Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Bahrain, stated: "Today's event vividly demonstrates how community action, guided by the SDGs, can create tangible environmental impact. Together we made a difference and a wave of change." The Embassy of Japan reaffirms its commitment to fostering sustainability and ocean protection through this initiative. Looking ahead, the Japan Anime Fest 2025, from November 27 to December 4, will further strengthen these partnerships, showcasing eight acclaimed Japanese animated films and offering an opportunity to experience the rich storytelling and artistic vision of Japanese animation.
This beach clean-up serves as a concrete step in the "One Ocean, Our Future" initiative, blending cultural exchange with environmental stewardship and community engagement. The Embassy will continue to announce future events, aiming to strengthen bonds within the community and between Japan and Bahrain in pursuit of shared goals.
