Commercial vehicles and trucks in Bahrain would be fitted with smart tachographs under a proposal from MP Maryam Al Dhaen.
The in-cab units would log speed, distance, driving and rest periods, and sleep hours.
Data would be recorded continuously, giving regulators a clear read on driver behaviour and any breaches such as speeding or long stints at the wheel linked to fatigue and crashes.
Al Dhaen said the system is widely used in advanced markets to set drivers’ hours and monitor performance.
She argued it would lift road safety, cut accidents tied to tiredness or excess speed, encourage safer habits, and give the authorities firm, data-based ground to shape road-freight policy and improve operating efficiency.
Her explanatory note points to European rules as the model.
Passenger and freight carriers there are required to install tachographs under EU Regulation No. 165 of 2014, which sets out how speed, time and braking are recorded as core tools for workplace and road safety.
