Bahrain Marks 14,000th Tree Planting on Muharraq Ring Road

In implementation of the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to expand tree planting across Bahrain as part of the national greening plan, His Excellency Shaikh Khalid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Deputy Prime Minister, planted the 14,000th tree today on Muharraq Ring Road. The ceremony was attended by several ministers and senior officials.

On this occasion, Shaikh Khalid highlighted that Bahrain’s greening initiatives, led by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and guided by the Crown Prince, reflect a comprehensive national vision aimed at strengthening environmental security, balancing economic development with natural resource protection, and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.

Shaikh Khalid stated: “Our visit to Muharraq today underscores the royal attention and care devoted to this historic city by His Majesty the King. The royal directives on accelerating housing projects in Muharraq, while ensuring infrastructure, reducing congestion, and facilitating movement for residents and visitors, provide the supportive framework for the governorate’s various development projects, including tree planting and beautification of major roads.”

He emphasized that Muharraq Ring Road, one of the Kingdom’s largest and most modern road projects, now incorporates sustainable environmental standards through the completion of tree planting. These measures enhance the quality of life and make major projects models that balance environmental responsibility with their role in improving traffic flow.

Shaikh Khalid also commended the ongoing efforts of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa in overseeing environmental plans and initiatives that promote sustainability and conserve natural resources.

He noted that the progress of the tree planting plan since its launch in 2022 demonstrates the government’s determination to achieve the goal of planting 3.6 million trees by 2035, ensuring sustainable green cover, improving air quality, enhancing biodiversity, and beautifying the Kingdom’s streets and main roads.

Shaikh Khalid expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Municipalities and Agriculture, the Muharraq Ring Road tree planting project team, and all involved entities for their coordination and cooperation, reflecting the spirit of a united Bahrain working toward strategic national goals.

Meanwhile, Engineer Wael bin Nasser Al Mubarak, Minister of Municipalities and Agriculture, expressed his sincere thanks to the Deputy Prime Minister for planting the final tree, highlighting the gesture as a symbol of his ongoing commitment to greening initiatives and environmental sustainability programs.

He also acknowledged the role of the Ministerial Committee for Development and Infrastructure Projects, chaired by Shaikh Khalid, in monitoring the progress of the greening plan and enhancing coordination among relevant agencies to ensure the achievement of objectives to the highest standards.

The Muharraq Ring Road greening project represents approximately 9% of this year’s target under the national plan, which aims to plant over 183,000 trees.

The trees planted in the project area are irrigated with treated water through a 22-kilometer-long network with a pumping capacity of 120 cubic meters per hour. The species planted include Hibiscus tiliaceus, Neem, Royal Poinciana, Albizia Lebbeck, and other trees suited to Bahrain’s local climate.
