During yesterday’s hearing, the defendant’s lawyer, Ahmed Tawq, presented arguments seeking his client’s acquittal, or alternatively, a reduced sentence with a suspension of its execution. Tawq argued that the lower court based its judgment on an initial police report, which claimed that the defendant overtook another vehicle, entered the opposite lane, and collided head-on with the victims’ car.

However, he said this version is contradicted by video footage of the incident included in the case file. The video allegedly shows the defendant’s car suddenly swerving sideways before being stopped by a roadside sand barrier and trees. Moments later, the victims’ car, without braking in time, struck the front right side of the defendant’s vehicle.

The case stems from a tragic traffic accident in Saar on May 30, 2025, which claimed the lives of a father, mother, and their young son, while leaving their two other children with serious injuries. The 29-year-old Bahraini driver was found to have been speeding, driving in the wrong direction, and under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of the crash.

The Traffic Court had earlier sentenced him to six years in prison, suspended his driving license for one year after serving the sentence, and ordered the confiscation of his vehicle. The Public Prosecution had called for the maximum penalty, citing the reckless nature of the act and the need to deter similar violations.

The Second High Criminal Appeals Court has set August 14 to deliver its verdict in the case.
