Shaikh Ahmed bin Hamad Al Khalifa, President of Customs Affairs, joined international customs leaders in Brussels this week to discuss how data can be better used to manage e-commerce more smoothly and securely. The session was part of the World Customs Organization (WCO) meetings held from June 23 to 28.
Leading Bahrain’s delegation, Sheikh Ahmed participated in key policy discussions that focused on the growing challenges of handling international parcels, improving data accuracy, and the need for stronger partnerships between customs departments and e-commerce stakeholders.
"With online shopping becoming a daily habit for people everywhere, customs authorities must find smarter, faster ways to keep goods moving while ensuring safety and compliance," said Shaikh Ahmed during the talks.
The meetings also touched on important global topics like customs valuation and building stronger technical skills in customs teams to cope with the pace of digital change.
A major highlight was the approval of new tools aimed at helping customs departments operate more efficiently — including an updated e-commerce package and security standards to better manage the rising volume of digital trade.
Bahrain’s participation reflects its commitment to modernizing customs work and supporting smooth global trade in a digital age.
