The Southern Area Municipality, in cooperation with Urbaser Cleaning Company, has removed approximately 7,619 tons of waste from Bahrain’s Sakhir region. The initiative, which lasted three months following the end of the camping season, involved the use of heavy and light machinery, trucks, and a large number of workers.

The municipality reported that daily waste collection amounted to 3,400 tons, equivalent to around 680 truckloads. An additional 4,219 tons—approximately 874 truckloads—of leftover camping materials, including abandoned furniture and construction debris, were also cleared. This brings the total waste removed to 7,619 tons so far.

Clean-up operations are still ongoing across Sakhir, with the campaign expected to conclude by the beginning of next month. An estimated 2,300 tons of waste remains to be removed, potentially bringing the total to nearly 10,000 tons—a 40% increase compared to last year’s camping season.

Municipal officials attributed the increase in waste to a lack of compliance by some campers with proper disposal methods, in violation of public hygiene regulations. Abandoned campsites were found to contain large amounts of debris, reflecting a growing environmental concern.

The clean-up targeted internal roads, commercial and recreational sites, and heavily frequented camping areas. The waste was collected and disposed of using environmentally friendly and safe methods to protect the region's natural ecosystem.

This campaign is part of the Southern Municipality’s strategic efforts to preserve Bahrain’s desert environment and reduce post-season pollution. The waste collected included items such as furniture, tires, ceramics, cabins, and wood—materials that pose environmental hazards if not properly managed.

The municipality emphasized its commitment to environmental sustainability, protection of biodiversity, and preservation of wildlife habitats. As part of its community partnership efforts, several joint clean-up drives were conducted alongside national companies such as Bapco Energies, as well as supporting firms including BSTS, AMA, Enerflex, NAMCO, MCSC, COMSIP, ASCON, and Halliburton. These collaborative efforts aim to keep Bahrain’s natural landscapes clean and free from waste.

The Southern Municipality continues to urge all campers and visitors to adhere to public cleanliness regulations to ensure the protection and beauty of the Kingdom’s natural environment.
