A proposal to shift rainwater drainage duties in Sanad, Hajiyat, and Nuwaidra from the Ministry of Municipalities to the Ministry of Works has been approved by the Southern Municipal Council.
The motion was brought forward by councillor Mohammed Darraj following complaints from residents about delays and a lack of equipment during periods of rainfall.
He said the current arrangement left inner streets prone to flooding, while the Ministry of Works had more tankers, pumps, and easier access to specialised teams.
Darraj argued that much of the flooding in smaller streets was caused by water spilling in from the main roads.
He said this placed the responsibility squarely on the Works Ministry.
Sites
The councillo also listed 18 sites across the constituency that routinely flood, yet only six tankers are available across the entire Southern Governorate, which includes ten constituencies.
Darraj estimated that more than 18 tankers would be required to handle the Fourth Constituency alone during heavy rainfall.
One tanker often has to revisit the same site multiple times, and it can take up to ten hours to clear a single area.
He also pointed out that just one inspector is currently responsible for both the Third and Fourth Constituencies, which he described as far too large for one person to manage.
