Pakistani thief catcher first expat to win EAY award
An Emirati and a Pakistani man who foiled a recent exchange shop robbery in Ras Al Khaimah has been selected as 'persons of the month' by the Dubai-based Emarat Al Youm (EAY) Arabic language daily, which introduced the award in 2012.
Rashid Al Shameeli of Ras Al Khaimah and Jallab Shah Khan were picked for the October award for their role in stopping a thief who was fleeing with a large sum of money stolen from an exchange shop in the northern Emirate.
They controlled the thief and turned him over to the police, who arrived in the scene shortly afterwards.
The two men were given the award for their "heroic" role in seizing the thief and serving the community, 'Emarat Al Youm' Editor-in-Chief Sami Al Riyami said.
EAY has awarded the prize to Emiratis on a monthly basis but this is the first time that an expatriate shares the award.
The daily, one of the most popular Arabic language newspapers in the region, launched the 'person of the month' award at the start of 2012 to honour outstanding people for their role in the society, the first prize of its kind in the country.
EAY is affiliate of the Dubai Media Incorporated, one of the largest publications in the region.
