One of India's leading journalists was arrested today for abetting the suicide of a man and his mother two years ago. Republic TV's Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami is accused of owing money to interior designer Anvay Naik that forced him to take his own life. His heartbroken mother Kumud Naik killed herself soon after in 2018.

This has become a hot topic in India, as different political leaders came up expressing their views about the arrest of the journalist.

Naik, a 53-year-old purportedly wrote a suicide note in which he claimed that Goswami and two others owed him Rs 5.4 crore and had refused to pay it back, forcing him to take the extreme step. The monetary transaction had taken place during the construction of Republic TV studio. When Naik's mother learned about Naik’s death, she too killed herself.

Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh in a tweet had said that a fresh probe was ordered after Naik’s daughter Adnya approached him regarding the case. “Adnya Naik had complained to me that Alibaug Police had not investigated non-payment of dues from Arnab Goswami’s Republic, which drove her entrepreneur father and grandmom to suicide in May 2018,” he tweeted. “I’ve ordered a CID re-investigation of the case.”

To this several of India’s ruling party’s ministers had come up condemning the arrest and also said the arrest is a reminder of the emergency in the past when Indira Gandhi’s government crackdown on the media.

Republic TV in its report claimed that Goswami was “assaulted and dragged” during the arrest. Goswami reportedly said that Mumbai Police also physically assaulted his mother-in-law and father-in-law, son, and wife. Republic TV had earlier denied the charges and claimed that “a false and malicious campaign” was being run against it by certain groups with vested interests.

In India Arnab Goswami is a journalist, widely supported by the ruling party for his pro-government views and he is also widely criticized too by the opposition parties for his purportedly arrogant nature and views.
