Shooting at US college killing one suspected to be gang-related: police
Los Angeles
A fistfight at a US community college that escalated into a shooting, leaving one student dead, could be gang-related, police said Friday as they hunted for the suspect.
The incident at Sacramento City College on Thursday began as a quarrel among students which led to a fistfight, college spokesman Rick Brewer told AFP.
"Then one of them took out a gun and began shooting," prompting a lockdown of the school, he said.
A 25-year-old student was killed and two others injured, police said, adding that one of the wounded had been arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
"The involvement of gang activity is not being ruled out," the Sacramento Police Department said in a statement.
The shooting suspect, described as a Pacific Islander, was still at large.
The incident comes amid a renewed debate in the United States over gun violence.
