46pc of taxis are on road with expired licenses

Dammam : An official of the national transport committee of the Council of Saudi Chambers said that out of the 48,510 taxis licensed by the Ministry of Transport in Saudi Arabia, 22,425 (46 percent) are working with expired licenses.

The official, who did not want to be identified, said 31,596 taxis are driven by Saudis; 20,036 of these have expired licenses and work illegally, and some have been sold despite it being illegal.

He said there are more than 1,345 public transportation office licenses in Saudi Arabia, mostly in Riyadh, Jeddah and the Eastern Province, and 526 of these have expired licenses.

Twenty private taxi companies are licensed and they 627 taxis.

A survey on the reasons for the poor quality of road transport in Saudi Arabia — involving taxis, trucks, buses, etc.. and about 7,000 investors and specialists — showed that more than 60 per cent of those surveyed blame the Ministry of Transport for the state the sector is in.

About 23 percent said Saudis using foreign workers in the sector for financial gains has resulted in poor services, and 13 percent say the sector’s services are below standard.
