Saudi Arabia Urges UN to Act Against Houthi Attacks

Saudi Arabia has urged the UN Security Council to take stronger action against the Houthis, warning that calls for de-escalation cannot succeed while the group continues to receive support enabling attacks.

Saudi Ambassador to the UN Abdulaziz Alwasil made the remarks during an emergency Security Council session following a series of Houthi attacks targeting Saudi cities. He described the strikes as part of a broader pattern of aggression that has also threatened commercial shipping and freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and Bab Al-Mandeb Strait.

Alwasil reaffirmed Riyadh's right to defend its territory, citizens and residents, saying Saudi Arabia would take necessary measures to deter further attacks.

He called on the council to fully enforce UN Security Council Resolutions 2216 and 2722, including the arms embargo on the Houthis and demands to halt attacks on commercial vessels.

Yemen's ambassador Abdullah Alsaadi expressed solidarity with Saudi Arabia and rejected the use of Yemeni territory to launch attacks against neighbouring countries. He also called for accountability for those financing and supplying the Houthi group.

Alsaadi warned that Saudi Arabia's restraint should "not be misconstrued as weakness."
