Nepali Army Rescues 350 Trapped in Hydropower Tunnel Amid Severe Flooding

Kathmandu: Nepali Army helicopter rescue teams have successfully evacuated 350 workers and locals trapped inside a tunnel at the Trishuli 3A hydropower project following catastrophic flooding that swamped northern Nepal.

Rescue operations remain underway as military personnel attempt to safely reach and extract more than 100 people who remain trapped inside the subterranean complex. Nepal Army spokesman Raja Ram Basnet highlighted the extreme difficulty of the mission, noting that adverse weather, rapid floodwaters, and severe terrain damage have made locating entry points to the swamped tunnels exceptionally challenging. The devastating flash floods, which swept through the Trishuli valley two days prior, were triggered by a massive glacial collapse and ice-avalanche debris flow upstream.

The catastrophic deluge has destroyed critical roads, bridges, and energy infrastructure across the mountainous border region, isolating communities and hitting multiple operating and under-construction hydropower plants. Rescued workers described a disaster that unfolded with terrifying speed, as powerful currents swept away facilities and personnel while search and recovery operations continued across the affected districts.
