US Senate Passes New Sanctions On Russian Energy

Washington DC: The US Senate has passed a landmark sanctions package aimed at cutting off the critical energy revenues funding Russia’s war machine in Ukraine.
The sweeping legislation imposes steep tariffs of up to 500 percent on Russian gas and oil, while levying 100 percent tariffs on major buyer nations, including China and India.
Crucially, the measure marks the first time Washington has directly targeted Russia’s shadow fleet, a network of clandestine vessels used by Moscow to circumvent international trade embargoes.
Additional sanctions zero in on Russian President Vladimir Putin and top officials, seeking to exert economic pressure that lawmakers hope will push Moscow to the negotiating table.
Named in honor of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, the bill now awaits a vote in the House of Representatives following the congressional summer recess in September.
