Solar Eclipse Set To Disrupt Europe’s Power Supply

Brussels: European power grid operators are preparing for a sudden drop in solar generation as a rare solar eclipse passes over the continent on August 12.
Under clear skies, solar power output across Europe could decrease by up to 9.7 gigawatts between 19:15 and 21:30 CEST. Spain and Germany are expected to record the most significant drops in generation.
To prevent potential disruptions, network association ENTSO-E activated a dedicated task force to monitor the electricity grid, balance supply, and coordinate real-time responses among national operators.
Grid managers have also paused planned maintenance outages and integrated updated weather forecasts into control rooms to maximize operational flexibility and ensure uninterrupted power supply to consumers.
With solar energy now accounting for nearly 13 percent of Europe's total electricity mix, grid managers are increasingly well prepared to manage short-term natural weather phenomena and safeguard continent-wide energy security.
