Saudi-Led Maritime Coalition Expands as More Nations Prepare to Join

The Saudi-led Multinational Maritime Defense Coalition is gaining momentum, with several countries formally joining the alliance and more expected to become members in the coming weeks. Rear Adm. Abdullah bin Salem Al-Shehri, recently appointed commander of the coalition, said participation remains open to all countries committed to protecting international shipping routes.
Established by Saudi Arabia and 13 founding nations, the coalition aims to safeguard freedom of navigation, international trade and global energy supplies across the Red Sea, Bab Al-Mandab Strait and the Gulf of Aden. Officials stressed that the alliance is purely defensive, operates in line with international law and respects the sovereignty of all states.
Saudi Arabia hosted representatives from 43 countries during the coalition's founding meeting in Riyadh, highlighting broad international support for maritime security. A planning meeting scheduled for August 12-13 will focus on strengthening the coalition's operational framework and welcoming additional member states.
