Hungary to shut nuclear plant as heatwave grips Central Europe

Budapest: Hungary is prepared to close its only nuclear power station, Paks, due to record-low water levels in the Danube River caused by a severe Central European heatwave, which will leave insufficient water to cool its reactors. The plant, which typically supplies over half of the country's electricity, is already working at less than 50% capacity and might be out for weeks if conditions do not improve.
The shutdown comes as rising temperatures raise electrical consumption throughout the region. Hungary has encouraged major industrial users to reduce their power and water use, as officials prepare to increase electricity imports to avoid shortages. Neighbouring Romania is also facing similar issues, with one reactor already shut down owing to low water levels.
The unusual action shows how long-term heatwaves and droughts are rapidly undermining Europe's energy infrastructure, with diminishing rivers hurting nuclear power generation, hydropower, and inland shipping around the continent.
