Guwahati: A 13 year old boy died after rescuing his pet puppy from floodwaters in Assam, in a tragedy that has touched people across the country amid the state's devastating floods.
Hridip Panika, a Class 7 student from Sivasagar district, jumped into the swollen waters after seeing his three-month-old puppy being swept away by the current. He managed to save the puppy, but was himself carried away by the floodwaters. His body was later recovered by rescuers.
The Panika family had already lost their home and belongings in the floods. Videos showing Hridip's grieving parents beside his body, with the rescued puppy nearby, have gone viral on social media, prompting an outpouring of condolences.
A local content creator later visited the family and provided financial assistance from a community relief fund. The incident has become one of the most heartbreaking stories to emerge from this year's Assam floods.
