Two Hong Kong bookstores to close following police operation

Hong Kong: Two independent bookshops in Hong Kong have declared that they will close after police raided their premises and arrested five persons for supposed seditious publications. Officers seized books and other items during the operation, which was conducted in accordance with the city's national security laws.
The closures have raised new concerns about the situation of free expression in Hong Kong, with rights groups warning that independent publishers and booksellers are under increasing pressure. One of the bookshops had already claimed financial difficulties and mounting legal uncertainties as reasons for closing, while the other said the raid made it impossible to continue operations.
Critics claim that the police action, which is a part of a continuous attack on publications thought to pose a threat to national security, is further limiting the space available for independent voices in the city.
