Honiara : At least 10 people are feared dead after a landslide at the Chinese-owned Gold Ridge gold mine in the Solomon Islands, according to local media reports.

The country’s disaster management authorities confirmed the landslide at the mine, located about 25 kilometres south-east of the capital, Honiara. The police did not confirm the reported death toll, while a hospital said it was expecting to receive fatalities.

Images from the site showed bulldozers clearing collapsed earth and rocks.

Gold Ridge is a major contributor to the Solomon Islands’ economy and is majority-owned by Chinese company Wanguo International Mining. The mine reportedly contributed nearly a quarter of the country’s GDP last year.
