Trump Gives Iran Talks ‘Little Bit of Room,’ US Envoy Says

Strikes paused as Washington and Tehran signal a fragile truce

US President Donald Trump halted military strikes against Iran to create room for diplomatic talks, US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz said Sunday, as Washington and Tehran signaled a temporary halt in hostilities.

Speaking to Fox News, Waltz said Trump was "giving talks some space" and "a little bit of room," though he offered no further details on ongoing diplomatic contacts.

His remarks followed a weekend lull in fighting. The Pentagon suspended its bombing campaign after 13 straight nights of strikes, and no new Iranian attacks on neighboring countries were reported over the weekend.

A senior Trump administration official said Saturday that despite recent escalation, the president still favors a diplomatic solution, noting Trump "has shown Iran what will happen if they fail to come to the table."

A senior Iranian source told Reuters Tehran would maintain the pause if Washington halts attacks first, calling the policy "attack for attack." However, the source said Iranian officials remain deeply skeptical, viewing the pause as "tactical rather than genuine."

The near two-week escalation had raised fears of wider regional conflict, disrupting shipping and air travel across the Middle East. Diplomatic channels remain open, though mistrust runs deep on both sides.
