Biden Keeps Low Profile as Cancer Treatment Shapes Post-White House Life
Former US President Joe Biden has been living a more private life since leaving the White House, focusing on treatment for prostate cancer that has spread to his bones, spending time with his family and working to preserve his political legacy, according to a report by The Washington Post.
The newspaper, citing people close to Biden, said his treatment has been producing positive results, although it has left the 83-year-old appearing more physically frail. Unlike several former US presidents, Biden has significantly reduced his public engagements and has not established a major charitable or political foundation.
The report also said Biden has faced difficulties raising funds for his presidential library, limiting his ability to shape public perceptions of his presidency.
Biden is scheduled to release his memoir on November 17, a move that has reportedly raised concerns among some Democrats who fear it could revive debate over his health and the 2024 presidential campaign at a time when the party is seeking to focus on challenging President Donald Trump.
According to The Washington Post, questions surrounding Biden's health may intensify following a court ruling allowing the release of recordings and documents previously used to assess his mental fitness. Republicans have continued to use the issue as a political line of attack.
Concerns over Biden's age and his physical and mental fitness followed him throughout his presidency and reached a peak after his June 2024 debate with Trump, during which he appeared with a weak voice and repeatedly lost his train of thought.
Despite the concerns, Biden's aides reportedly believe the promotional tour for his memoir will have little impact on the upcoming midterm elections, arguing that voters remain more focused on economic conditions and the rising cost of living than on the former president.
