Rebel Wilson wins defamation case brought by actress from her own film

Sydney: Rebel Wilson, an Australian actor and filmmaker, won a defamation lawsuit brought by Charlotte MacInnes, the lead actress in Wilson's directorial debut The Deb. A judge concluded that Wilson's Instagram posts did not unlawfully defame her.

MacInnes sued Wilson for four social media posts written between 2024 and 2025. She said the posts inaccurately indicated that she had privately told Wilson she felt uncomfortable following an incident involving The Deb producer Amanda Ghost, but later revised her narrative to gain professional opportunities.

The issue revolved on an incident in September 2023 that involved MacInnes and Ghost. Wilson reported that MacInnes initially exhibited concern about what had occurred but eventually withdrew or modified her story.

MacInnes denied that Wilson's version of events was correct, claiming that the posts had ruined her reputation.

Justice Elizabeth Raper of the Federal Court of Australia dismissed MacInnes' defamation suit, concluding that she had failed to prove that the disclosures caused, or were likely to cause, severe harm to her reputation. The judge also determined that the relevant allegation was not defamatory, and that Wilson had demonstrated its substantial truth.

MacInnes' claim for breach of confidentiality was similarly denied, and she was compelled to pay Wilson's legal fees. Her legal team is expected to appeal the decision. Following the verdict, Wilson thanked her supporters and expressed her eagerness to return to her family and career.
