Bangkok: Myanmar’s leader Min Aung Hlaing will make his first official visit to Thailand next month since stepping down as junta chief to assume the role of civilian president.

The landmark trip, scheduled for August, was confirmed Wednesday by Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow as part of efforts to normalize relations.

Thailand is leading diplomatic initiatives to bring Myanmar back into the international fold after years of isolation following the military’s 2021 coup.

Minister Sihasak emphasized the necessity of direct communication, stating that regional neighbors need to listen and engage with Myanmar after five years of political disruption and civil war.

The upcoming visit follows an informal meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers hosted by Thailand, which marked Myanmar’s first return to such gatherings since being diplomatically sidelined. Min Aung Hlaing's upcoming trip succeeds recent state visits to Laos, India, and China.
