San Francisco : One person has died and two others remain missing after a recreational boat carrying 19 people sank near Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay, prompting a major search and rescue operation.
Emergency crews rescued 16 people from the cold waters after the three-deck pontoon boat went down on Tuesday afternoon. Several survivors were taken to hospital with injuries, while one person later died. Search teams, supported by boats, helicopters and divers, continued looking for the two missing passengers in difficult conditions.
Authorities said the vessel was found almost completely submerged with its engine still running and leaking fuel. Initial reports suggested there had been a fire on board, but officials later confirmed there was no evidence of a fire and the cause of the sinking remains under investigation.
Witnesses described rough waters and strong winds at the time of the incident. Nearby boats also helped rescue passengers before emergency responders arrived.
The boat had departed from the San Francisco waterfront before the accident occurred near the popular tourist destination of Alcatraz Island. Authorities have not released the identities of those involved and are continuing to investigate what caused the vessel to sink.
